Antibiotic-free pig farming in Croatia

• From precious pig and F1 sauan breeding to fattening, everything is done in one location.
• Current herd of about 400 breeding sows (genetics of the Upper Austrian Breeding Association), 5,500 animals on the plant.

The special feature of the farm is pig breeding without antibiotics. Less than 2% of all animals receive therapeutic treatment with antibiotics during the year. Minimal use of the red-run and parvo vaccine as well as no use of zinc as is popular with Danes to reduce antibiotic use to at least about 20-30%. Agroplus 2006 is world leader in the field of antibiotic-free pig breeding (comparable farms are only found in Norway and Sweden) and was therefore invited in March to a project group of the FAO (Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN) to provide guidance for significantly reduced antibiotic use in animal husbandry. In addition to optimal management and high-quality feed, the right genetics are crucial for antibiotic use.
